The Day Christ was Born

Introduction        Every Christmas season, Christians everywhere are presented with sermons and plays which seemingly portray the birth of Christ and what it means to us.  And these events, for better or for worse, are based on traditional beliefs, and not on biblical beliefs.   The central theme is taken to revolve around the birth of Christ being December 25th, which many sources take for granted that this is a Christian belief.  But, was Jesus born on December 25th, or on some other date?  For those who would say, What difference does it make? I would counter by saying that the more we can learn about our Savior, and that being the truth, the greater insight God gives us to understand other truths.  Nowhere is this any clearer than when we contemplate God's bible in the sky, the constellations, which He created: [And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:] Genesis 1:14

This account regarding the actual date of Christ's birth, however, does not depend on any constellation confirmation whatsoever, but, as will be shown, the constellations are consistent with what the scriptures reveal to us about the birth of Christ.  And, while we cannot pinpoint the actual date of His return,  we can identify the actual dates of His birth, crucifixion and  resurrection.   There is at least one compelling account which puts Jesus' birth taking place in 3/2 BC**, but this account identifies both the exact year and day of His birth. The date of Jesus' birth is determined by first considering the date of His crucifixion.  For brevity, I have included links to those sites which greatly expand the reasoning and research for certain events beyond what is presented here.  I would encourage the reader to check these links out.  Thus, this account is but a small summary of the topic at hand.

The Two-Sabbath Week       A little-known fact among Christians is that the nation of Israel observed - from the beginning of their existence - certain feasts in which the first day of the feast was to be a Sabbath, a holy convocation day, and also known as an high day Sabbath [1].     This first day of the feast was always considered to be a Sabbath and was completely independent of the weekly Sabbath, which was observed every seventh day, and which was never to be abrogated.  Therefore, it became possible, from time to time, that two Sabbaths could occur in the same week, and that is precisely what occurred the week in which our Lord Jesus was crucified.

A necessary condition imposed upon the determination of Christ's crucifixion date is that the three days and three nights duration be comprised of 72 hours, and not some made-up manipulation of half-days or half-nights being considered as being whole days or whole nights.  Something similar to this manipulation must be the heretical rationale for declaring Good Friday as the day of Christ's crucifixion.  Good Friday has been a heretical thorn in the side of Christianity ever since the Roman church invented it.  But, what makes this nonsense so incredible is that so many Christians are still willing to believe such a lie.

The heretical Good Friday belief notwithstanding, the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread (which immediately followed the Passover), was always an high day Sabbath [2].  The day following Christ's crucifixion on Passover was such an high-day Sabbath [John 19:31], and it was necessary that the three crucified bodies be interred before sundown, as this marked the beginning of the high day Sabbath.  It is well-known that Jews were prohibited from doing any kind of work on the Sabbath, so the women at Jesus' crucifixion could neither purchase the spices for Christ's burial nor prepare them on such a day because they were at the tomb when Jesus was placed in it [Matthew 27:55-61].    Thus, the women had to wait until the high-day Sabbath was past, purchase and prepare the spices on Friday following the high-day Sabbath, and rest until the weekly Sabbath was past [Luke 23:54-56]

In order for the above-mentioned scenario to have taken place, it was necessary that the Lord Jesus be crucified on a Wednesday, the high-day Sabbath to occur on Thursday, and resurrection to take place on Saturday.  Given the above, one may ask, How do you know what particular Wednesday could it have been in which the Lord was crucified?  For that, we consult some astronomical data obtained from the U.S. Naval Observatory Applications Department which is presented in the table below.*  (for complete tabular information see the cited URL)

According to this section of the table, only one date provides us with the plausible answer to the critical Wednesday, and that fell on April 25th, 31 AD.    April 28th, in 28 AD puts us well outside the feasible time frame when other ancillary information is considered**  and when  we consider that the Lord Jesus began His ministry when He was exactly 30 years old [Luke 3:23].

**     Placing Herod's death in 1 B.C. allows us to accept the ANCIENT tradition that the Messiah was born in 3 B.C. The evidence of history, archaeology and astronomy is now showing that Herod died in early 1 B.C. and that the Messiah was therefore born in 3/2 B.C. (regnal dating) -- as confirmed by Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Africanus, Hippolytus of Rome, Hippolytus of Thebes, Origen, Eusebius and Epiphanius.    ----  Juan Antonio Revilla and John D. Keyser       Herod the Great dying in 1 BC is consistent with Herod's decree to execute all two-year and under Jewish males [Matthew 2:16] and is consistent with  3 BC as the date of Jesus' birth.  ev

Connecting Jesus' Birth with His Death      Identifying the specific year in which two Sabbaths occurred in the same week, and imposing the proviso that Jesus would be in the tomb three days and three nights (as the scripture says), then only when the high day Sabbath would occur on a Thursday could this proviso be met.    According to the tabular data above, there are only two dates in which there were two Sabbaths in the same week that satisfied the Passover being on Wednesday - these years were 28 AD and 31 AD.   Of these two dates, 28 AD is ruled out because this would force Jesus' birth to have taken place outside the plausible parameters.

If the Lord Jesus was born on October 25th, 3 BC, then He would have begun His ministry in 27 AD, for He would have been 30 years old, as the scripture declares    And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli, ...   Luke 3:23  The Lord Jesus' ministry can be likened to Elijah's ministry, in that His ministry is sandwiched in between Elijah's two ministries, that of his ministry before he was taken up into Heaven in a chariot of fire [2Kings 2:11], and that of his three and one-half year ministry-to-come commencing at the very beginning of the Tribulation, i.e., the first three and one-half years.*   When His disciples asked Jesus about Elijah's coming,

And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?   And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.   But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.   Matthew 17:10-12

The Lord Jesus told them that Elijah had both already come and that he would also come again (during the Tribulation), to restore all things.  God will send Elijah at the beginning of the Tribulation*, to witness for three and one-half years

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:  And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.    Malachi 4:5,6

And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.   Revelation 11:3

If we put Jesus' ministry to parallel Elijah's ministry, then He too would have ministered for three and one-half years.  This would put Jesus' ministry to have begun on

October 25th, 27 AD, the day He became 30 years old.  And if we forward His three and one-half year ministry, we arrive at April 25th, 31 AD,  the day He was crucified.

Three days and three nights later,   between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday,   Jesus resurrected after  being in Paradise in the spirit,   thus fulfilling His own prophecy

concerning Jonas being in the whale's belly for three days and three nights [Matthew 12:40].  Now, if we consider that Jesus' ministry was for three years instead of three and one-half years, He would have had to be born on April 25th, which is completely out of sync with all other data.   Therefore, if we consider the scriptures above, we can confidently conclude that the Lord Jesus was born on October 25th, 3 BC.

But there is biblical evidence that might support the three and one-half year ministry premise, that of a certain man who had a vineyard in the which he had planted a fig tree which had not borne fruit in three years. It is quite possible that the certain man (the owner of the vineyard) heeded the advice of his vineyard dresser and gave it an additional six months to bear fruit.  Read the account in Luke 13:6-9 and judge for yourself. (Remember that the fig tree symbolizes the nation of Israel's religious system, and rejecting Jesus as their Messiah would certainly be at the top of their failure to bear fruit).

The Astronomical Connection       In his famous book, The Gospel in the Stars, Dr. Joseph A. Seiss does a masterful  job of presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ as defined by the twelve constellations alluded to so beautifully by God

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: Genesis 1:14

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.  Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.  There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.   Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.  In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.  His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.   Psalms 19:1-6

Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?  Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth* in his season?  or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?  Knowest Image result for free virgo constellation images onlythou the ordinances of heaven?  canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?  Job 38:31 * the twelve signs of the Zodiac

The first six verses of Psalm 19 are a vivid description of the marvelous nature of the constellations.  To the casual reader, the phrase "Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge" may only mean an extension of the preceding words, but in reality the phrase reveals the gospel of Jesus Christ in literal terms.  But, how can stars speak so that their voice may be heard?  The answer lies in their names, that from antiquity have not only described the nature and character of Jesus Christ, but that have prophetically been associated with various events of the gospel - complete even unto Christ's victorious battle with that old serpent, the Devil.  How old are these constellations?  Physically, of course, they are as old as the earth itself, since they were created immediately after God created the earth [Genesis 1:16].  Their star names, according to Josephus and others, date back to the time of Adam (see [3] in the Addendums).  That being said, the story of Christ which was certainly both known and understood by the antediluvians, was corrupted by Satan into the field that today we call astrology.

image above right:

Yet, even in the corrupt rendition(s) of replacing the original names and meanings of the constellations with mythical names and meanings, there still remains a great similarity between the two, so that the counterfeiting certainly becomes obvious.  But, Christians need not compare them, for this serves no good purpose whatsoever.  Dr. Seiss has faithfully catalogued for us the original names and meanings, along with many other sources of original works concerning the same.  The astronomical information contained in this account is therefore presented only for the purpose of the affirmation of the gospel of Jesus Christ as being consistent, and nowhere contradictory to, the results presented here as to the actual dates of the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

As the earth revolves around the sun, the sun is said to "tabernacle" through the 12 constellations, and completes its circuit through heaven, thus "telling" the gospel night after night, in all lands and countries, and in their languages.  Could God have stated this marvelous starry arrangement any better?  No, but the Great Counterfeiter, Satan, developed over time a mythical parallel in astrology.   Satan's corrupt astrological system notwithstanding, God's bible in the sky has existed even from the time of Adam [3], and will stand until God decides to dissolve it

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.  Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?  2Peter 3:10,12

In the study of astronomy, an important requirement  is that of learning the names of the various stars and their magnitude (of brightness).  Each one of the twelve major constellations (solar zodiac) have three distinct clusters of stars themselves, which are called decans.    It is the arrangement of these stars that have been designated to represent various animals since the time of Adam by some unknown entity.  However, logic tells me that that designator most certainly had to be God Himself, for who in their right mind would assign the names they have just by looking at them.  As for me, the only constellation that resembles its name is Scorpio, for it does indeed look like a scorpion.    I believe, without reservation, that, just like Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith, God Himself authored the constellation names and meanings because they depict in a marvelous way  the true account of the gospel of Christ.

The Astronomical Connection - The Birth of Christ     One of the major constellations which students in Astronomy are required to learn about  is  Virgo(the virgin).  In this constellation, Spica (the brightest star of Virgo) represents an ear of wheat, symbolic of  both "the Seed of the woman" (which refers to Christ- Genesis 3:15), the corn which, upon falling and dying, would bring forth much fruit (John 12:24), and the BRANCH [Isaiah 11:1 and Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15].    Other stars of Virgo denoted by their decans are

  • Decan Coma (the desired One)          "...and the Desire of all  nations shall come:.."  Haggai 2:7
  • Decan Centaurus   "the Despised"  "He is despised and rejected of men;..."  Isaiah 53:3      "the Pierced"  "...they pierced my hands and my feet." Psalms 22:16
  • Decan BoÖtes (the Coming One)    "the BRANCH"  Zechariah 6:12          "...he cometh to judge the earth..."Psalms 96:13

These star-groups describe a coming Redeemer to judge the earth, yet they also tell of His suffering, a Suffering Messiah.  These are but a small sample of the star- names that describe the birth of Jesus, and I would highly recommend Dr. Joseph A. Seiss' book in addition to this site:   According to the table below which contains the constellation names and times assigned to them by the world's foremost astronomers, the constellation Virgo has been  assigned the time period of 16September – 30 October.  Therefore, constellation affirmation dictates that Jesus' birth took place within this time period.

In the image above, note  the proximity of Virgo and Leo - the constellation circuit begins with Virgo and ends with Leo, an apt order depicting Jesus' life from His birth to His victorious vanquishing of Satan who is depicted by the fleeing Hydra. (shown clearly in the image below)

The Astronomical Connection - Jesus is Crucified  The constellation Aries symbolizes a male sheep, the Ram.  As such, we can immediately see two striking features: the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world at the cross of Calvary, and the Lamb in the book of Revelation, who will be the only one able to open the book of the seven seal judgments of the earth

And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.  And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?  And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.  And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.  And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. Revelation 5:1-5

And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;  Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.  And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.  Revelation 5:11-13

In accordance with the foregoing, here are some of the star names and their meanings of the constellation Aries

  • English    Ram            "High, Great, Elevated, lifted up"             "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me."    John 12:32
  • Arabic     Al Hamal     "the Sheep, the Gentle, the Merciful"      "O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.     1Chronicles 16:34
    • Al Sharetan     "the Wounded, the Bruised, the Slain"    "But he was wounded for our transgressions,..."   Isaiah 53:5
    • Al Botein         "the treading under foot"                         "...and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God."  Revelation 19:15
    • Al Thuraiya     "the enemy punished"                                          Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord,... 2Thessalonians 1:9
  • Syriac  Amroo        "the Lamb, the Branch, the Palm-branch"   And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:  Zechariah 6:12

These star-name meanings certainly serve to describe our Savior - while gentle as Lamb who went willingly to the Cross of Calvary for our transgressions, yet one day will subdue all powers and principalities under His feet, for He shall reign forever and ever.  When He returns to set up His kingdom He will speak His temple into existence as Zechariah 6:12 tells us.  And, according to the table below, which contains the constellation names and times assigned to them by the world's foremost astronomers, the constellation Aries is assigned the time period of 19 April – 13 May , which includes April 25th.    Therefore, the constellation Aries affirms that Jesus' crucifixion took place within this time frame.

The Astronomical Connection - Jesus Conquers Satan       There is no greater victory portrayed in the heavens than that of Christ's victory over Satan as depicted in the image of the constellation Leo, and we well know from the scriptures that Christ is known as the Lion from the Tribe of Juda (Revelation 5:5).  And while no one has been able to learn the origin of the star names (which have been penned in Arabic, Hebrew, Chaldean, and others), yet they all have essentially the same meaning.**  Other biblical meanings associated with particular stars in the constellation Leo are the following from  The Gospel in the Stars, by Dr. Joseph A. Seiss;  Scripture assignments are mine  ev

  • Regel, or Regulus   "the feet which crush"      Genesis 3:15
  • Denebola               "the Judge"     Acts 10:42  and Revelation 20:11-13
  • Al Giebha              "the Exalted"   Philippians 2:9
  • Zozma           "the shining forth"      John 5:35  and  Acts 26:13
  • Minchir al Asad  "the punishing or tearing of him who lays waste"     II Thessalonians 1:9  and  2Peter 2:9
  • Al Defera      "the putting down of the enemy"    Revelation 18:21
  • Deneb al Eced     "the Judge coming who seizes or violently takes"     Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.  Hebrews 12:26

As the earth revolves around the sun, the sun is said to "tabernacle" through the 12 constellations, and completes its circuit through heaven, thus "telling" the gospel night after night, in all lands and countries, and in their  Could God have stated this marvelous starry arrangement any better?  No, but the Great Counterfeiter, Satan, developed over time a mythical parallel in astrology.   Satan's corrupt astrological system notwithstanding, God's sky bible has existed even from the time of Adam [3], and will stand until God decides to dissolve it      image right:

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.  Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?  2Peter 3:10,12

In the heavens, one can see the feet of Leo about to crush Hydra, the fleeing Serpent, thus portraying Christ vanquishing Satan.  There are many, many, more pictorial examples of the gospel with other constellations as well, and I would urge the reader to obtain a copy of Dr. Seiss' book.  So, where is the astronomical connection?  The IAU constellation boundaries in the table below, determined by the ablest of the world's astronomers, shows the constellation Virgo defined within 16 September – 30 October.  Jesus was born on October 25th, 3 BC, began His ministry on October 25, 27 AD, was crucified on April 25th, 31 AD, and resurrected on April 28th, 31 AD [see the details at The Resurrection of Jesus Christ].  Thus, this astronomical constellation assignment is consistent with Jesus being born in October 25th, for COMA is the "Desire of the nations" in Virgo [Haggai 2:7], i.e., the Lord Jesus Christ who is prophesied in Genesis 3:15 as our Savior.

** With the exception, of course, of all references to the constellations as being representative of any and all astrological meaning, as astrology is viewed today.  One of the counterfeit assignments that Satan has imposed upon God's magnificent starry portrayal of the gospel is that of replacing the name of the constellation Coma (the Desire of the nations), with Bernice's Hair  (a mythical name concerning some Greek god)

Because the Earth's axis is at an angle, some signs take longer to rise than others, and the farther away from the equator the

observer is situated, the greater the difference. Thus, signs are spoken of as "long" or "short" ascension.[46]

Summary     This account has presented evidence which establishes Jesus' birth as being October 25th, 3 BC, the beginning of His ministry to the nation of Israel as October 25th, 27 AD, His crucifixion on April 25th, 31 AD, and His resurrection 3 days later on Saturday between 3 and 6 pm.*   This evidence includes the astronomical data on the Jewish Passover dates of April, 31 AD (concerning His crucifixion), the extremely accurate data concerning Jesus' birth occurring on 3/2 BC according to regnal dating, the stellar confirmation in the constellations Virgo and Aries by the world's most eminent astronomers and that of Dr. Joseph Seiss' writings, the  author of The Gospel in the Stars.   Implicit in the term of Jesus' ministry being 3-1/2 years is the scripture of the Parable of the Fig Tree. **

[1]  All Feasts began with a Sabbath (an holy convocation) on the First Day:  (see Leviticus 23:39 and Exodus 12:16)

[2]  Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread

In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD's passover.  And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.    Leviticus  23:5,6

In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even.    Exodus 12:18

Thus, the Israelites were to eat unleavened bread for eight days, but the Feast of Unleavened Bread was to commence on the day after the Passover.  In other words, although the children of Israel were commanded to eat unleavened bread on the day of the Passover, the Passover was not counted to be the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, as  Leviticus  23:6 tell us, because the feast didn't start until the 15th day of the month, the day after the Passover.

[3]  Age of the Constellations    Dr. Seiss writes

There is nothing, then, improbable in the report of Josephus when he says that the descendants of Seth were skillful astronomers, and seems to ascribe to them the invention of the cycle of which Cassini has developed the excellence.  The Jews, Assyrians, and Arabians have abundance of traditions concerning the antediluvian astronomical knowledge, especially of Adam, Seth, Enoch, and Ham.  It was asserted in the book of Enoch, as Origen tells us, that the constellations in the time of that patriarch were already named and divided.  The Arabians say that they have named Enoch Edris, on account of his learning.   The Gospel in the Stars, p. 175

About Seth and his children, Josephus writes

"They also were the inventors of that peculiar sort of wisdom which is concerned with the heavenly bodies, and their order."  Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews - Book I , CHAPTER 2. CONCERNING THE POSTERITY OF ADAM, AND THE TEN GENERATIONS FROM HIM TO THE DELUGE,
